Becoming a Mage
Anyone with enough will and concentration can pull together scraps of magic to perform simple Witcher signs, but only those few blessed with true magical talent have the capability of learning to become true sorcerers and sorceresses (collectively known as mages).
Most are located and trained from an early age. Training generally takes years or even a lifetime, though those born as a source tend to learn faster. However, in these troubled times, magic has become more of a necessity (at least, to some) and even adults with magical abilities are sought out, or seek us out, and taught to control their latent magical abilities.
So how does this work OOCly?
To become a sorcerer or sorceress first you need to have the talent Magic Talent purchased at character creation. With that in hand one only needs to seek out an active mage and convince him or her to be allowed in the training, while proving the presence of magic within them, generally by passing a test. Once accomplished, simply play on your character story through the training that, depending on activity of the applicant, can be around a month long.
Here comes the hiccup. There is no Reasonable Right to Life protection when it comes to the Mage’s Gauntlet, a fancy name for a relatively simplistic series of tests. Your character can be dead at the end of it, or worse, horribly crippled for life, so be certain you want to take your character down this path. Do you still believe this is something you want to risk?
During the Mage’s Gauntlet, you will roll a single Chance Roll and this Chance Roll will decide your fate. As with a Witcher’s Trials of the Grass, your chance is only three out of ten. In either case of the roll, it does not mean immediate death or immediate success necessarily. You may have several days of roleplay ahead of you, while either expanding your powers into their full glory.. Or setting yourself on fire and ending up a burning, twisted wretch.
