The Witcherverse
General Information: What's it about?
The Witcher universe is a harsh place, filled with not only monsters and violence but prejudice of all kinds. People tend to be superstitious and/or religious (sometimes both!), suspicious of strangers and many other things we nowadays might find unthinkable. Some content could make you uncomfortable, so please read through this website carefully and if you need anything clarified or just have questions, please don't hesitate to reach out towards the staff so any possible issues can be resolved.
Private Life and Sexuality: Lets have sex?!
In the world of the Witcher, the norm is that people live in gender-mixed marriages and the marriages usually last for a lifetime. Pre-marriage relationships do happen, but they are generally kept a secret, and an unmarried woman known to go with men too often may face severe social stigma. All the same, homosexuality and other sexual preferences exist in the world, however, they are even less common and therefore face even more social stigmatization than pre-marriage intercourse. As such, these are generally kept in secret and never revealed in public, especially in more rural places such as Ribbon's Crossing. While these tendencies can be more open in large and more decadent cities, they are generally never flaunted entirely openly.
Disclaimer: The staff is unconcerned about your real gender or preferences. We will never ask and such things are entirely entirely your own business. However, the setting should be kept in mind and consequences of actions always considered IC, and used for evolution of story purposes.
Dresscode: Lets get dressed!
The Witcherwerse is a universe visually based on medieval Europe, and its variety of cultures can be described easily as European attire between years 1000AD and 1550AD.
What does that mean? Simply: 'practical, simple and modest attire with flat shoes and heads are usually covered'. Interested in more detail?
Let us dive deeper into the world of fashion.
While the cultural span can vary largely over regions and social castes, we will take look on each of them accordingly, in order of their probable presence in a backward and remote place like Ribbon's Crossing.
The peasants, the commoners, the craftsmen: Across the centuries and cultures, this is the type of clothing that changes the least. Generally clothing is modest, covering most skin, and made of practical, durable fabrics such as coarse linen or wool and often decorated with hand sewn designs. All clothing is home-made. The common theme is practicality: The long sleeves protect from the sun during daily chores in the fields or harm from mishaps during hours spent crafting, flat shoes or bare feet for easy movement and stable footing, simple head covers protect hair from sun, dirt, smoke, flame or other harm. Men typically wear pants or knee-length tunics, women ankle long skirts and dresses with no cleavage. Married women wear their hair up under their hair coverings, while unmarried maidens and young girls generally style their hair in braids. During festivals and celebrations, dress is fancier, including elaborate head covers with designs made from their braids and often decorated with seasonal natural decorations such as flowers, and simple jewelry. No sane commoner would dress like this for daily life or for work. These are one-of-a-kind and worn to impress.
The townsfolk, the master craftsmen, the traders, the city councilors: These people are people of a position of importance in the world and manual labor is often delegated to their lessers. Their clothes would generally have shorter tunics, well fitted pants for men and layered skirts for women, bigger cleavage, hair decorated with simple jewelry or hats with elaborate designs. Their clothing would be far more colorful and their clothes would utilize buttons rather than laces - they mean to impress and flaunt their position, pretending they are more than they are. These people are just on the edge of practicality, still there is a lot of daily work to cover even for them.
The Scoia'tael: The rebellious non-humans do indeed live a life on the edge, and their attire would be a mix between the commoners and townsfolk, however as it is with elder races, many of their designs would feel more delicate. Still, the most utilized colors would be natural ones to help them blend, and their decorations would consist of the natural gifts of trophies from their raids and battles.
The dryads: The dryads live at one with nature. Their attire ranges from simple, natural decorations to flat out nudity, to any spoils they might have gained from humans wandering too close. Some of the dryads keep closer to civilized style but most prefer clothes made of natural materials such as leaves - of course, with their ability to shape the flora, their clothes would be literally made of living flowers and alike.
The whores, the entertainers: The whores and the entertainers are generally those that sell their wares through show of their own skin. Close to the city folk style, colorful to extreme, decorated with eye candy, these would wear clothes of large cleavage, short sleeves, sometimes even exposed bellies, shorter skirts, etc. Colorful flat shoes with longer tips or jingles and fancy hats with feathers would easily complete their looks. They are literally the visual parrots of the world. In reverse, anyone not of this profession but dressed as revealing as this would likely be also treated like one.
The mercenary types: These men and women would most likely be dressed like the poorer townsfolk, again tuned for practicality. Utilizing more leathers and padded coats topped with armors of various designs. Often times they wear darker colors, or colors of their company, decorated with mementos of their most famous battles.
The nobility: The nobility are a rare sight in Ribbons crossing. The men and women will wear elaborate fabrics, intricate brocades, silks but also long and heavy woolen coats. Most importantly however, no noble would go into the world without their servants. Almost a part of their wardrobe, warrior troupe surround them and protect them; the life of nobles flaunt the power and status in the world. Their outfits would be completed with rich intricate jewelry and fancy hats, fancy colorful fabric coated shoes, and they would likely have a horse. For a noble, much like for important city folk, the looks are everything. The difference is, these men and women can afford it. Still, they would not want to be associated with the more worldly professions, so they steer clear of presenting too much flesh to a common man. At festivals and parties however they might be a little more daring.
The Witches, Druids, Monks: The lesser magic practitioners and religious figures tend to go around in practical, modest attire. It is important to keep in mind that while witches and the like are feared, they are also held on the side of the society and they are not likely very rich. It usually does not help that they adorn themselves with talismans of their trade that can range all the way from bizarre such as dead animal parts, to perhaps a human ear lobe. Of course, monks and preachers rather wear symbols of their deities and are held in much higher esteem than the likes of witches.
The mages and sorceresses: These people often dress more like nobility because partly, they are. However, the sorceresses are women who often times use magic to enhance their appearance and their dresses tend to be far more revealing, decorated by numerous magical trinkets. Unlike the married women and maidens, they often wear their hair down and free-flowing, as a sign of their independence. There have also been sorceresses who dress modestly, so the selection is wide in this very rare breed. They tend to get away with dressing scantily because none would dare to challenge them directly. That said, behind their backs many people think they are probably whores because of this. In some cases, they may be close to the truth.
