Necromancy
Necromancy is the magical art of communicating with the dead. As such, this art is not exactly popular among people, and not even among other magic users, as it feels as one that is trying to breach into domain of the gods, therefore treading a dangerous line.
Where low grade necromancy is concerned the most common use for this is communication with the dead, as limited as this capability is, protection from the dead, and lastly putting dead to the rest. The apparent downfall of this art is that it can easily spiral out of control and what starts as communication effort might end up with a new specter roaming the land. It is very important to note that the dead practically never communicate willingly with the necromancer and consider it suffering, willing harm on their tormentor.
Another setback is that the older the corpse, the harder to extract any information. Even when questions are asked, the answers are rarely very coherent and need interpretation.
When it come to addressing the dead, you have ways of influencing things over Focus.
If you have no Focus increase the target number of the cast by 2.
Normal Focus is an object of normal daily use that was connected to the dead during the life. Such a focus keeps the basic Target number of the cast the same.
Close Focus is an object that had large relation to the target of the deceased. It can be someone's favorite trinket or jewel, someone's sword… Such a focus decreases the Target number by 2. Also, someone very close to the deceased can be used as a Focus, such as their lover. Necromancy is in all shapes a forced procedure, so the Focus person does not need to be willing to participate.
The next thing is determining how many questions the necromancer wants to ask of the dead, the more questions, the harder the cast. First topic is for free, and each next adds up +1 to cast Target number.
When the spell is cast with success, the dead shall communicate. This is not a show for faint hearted, they will beg and threaten in order to be put back to their rest, they will show pain and be twisted, they will dodge answer and try to speak in riddles when trying to answer, but they will eventually be forced to provide an answer. Work either with the player of the deceased character, or contact an admin for a scene beforehand, and we will see what can be arranged.
The rule of 1. Additional to Critical failure cast, necromancy holds a rule of 1. If you cast successfully or not, and roll a 1 on your cast roll, the dead will become anchored to the world. Please inform any admin of this. It is highly likely the dead shall start manifesting in undead form in the place, unable to leave this plane of existence.
